Nonprofit Status Info
The Magdalene Scholarship Fund is a 501(c)3 charitable organization. It has a board of directors but no paid staff members, no overhead and no fund-raising costs. All work is done on a volunteer basis, and all advertising is done through word of mouth and this website. Administrative costs such as postage and wire transfer fees are covered by Mark Mathabane. This allows the fund to send 100% of every dollar contributed to a special, secure bank account in Johannesburg, South Africa that is used solely for the needs of Bovet students. At the end of the year, Bovet School sends us receipts and an itemized list of how every penny in the fund was spent, including the names of the students helped.
Unlike organizations such as Save the Children, the Magdalene Scholarship Fund does not have the staff or resources necessary to match donors with individual children and facilitate communication between them. However, we can share thank you letters that we receive from time to time from students who are grateful for the financial support.
To request a copy of the organization’s 501(c)3 approval letter, please email Gail Mathabane, Secretary and Treasurer, at gem@mathabane.com.
