Miriam's Song -- The Dedication

Miriam's Song is dedicated to my friends and Comrades who came of age during the 1980s. Many died and many were detained and tortured while fighting for a better education system and for the right to be free in the land of their birth. The following song, I believe, capture the defiant spirit of this generation, whose fearlessness and sacrifices finally brought apartheid to its knees. We sang it mostly during protest marches and at night vigils. It is sung a cappella and each line is repeated four times.                                                                  -- Miriam

Senzeni Na
What have we done
Sibozwa nje?
to be so oppressed?
Sono zethu ubu myama?
Are our crimes/sins so heinous?
Amabunu a yi zinja.
While policemen are unfeeling dogs.
Vophu mthwala sigoduke.
Let's bear the burden of this life; we haven't far to go.
