How to Book a Lecture

Independent Schools, Public High Schools,
Colleges, Universities and Libraries

Standard Lecture Format

Mark typically delivers a lecture of about 40 minutes, followed by a question- and-answer session that usually lasts 15 to 20 minutes. The Q&A session is optional, and some schools prefer to skip it and allow Mark to speak for the full time allotted. It all depends on what works best for you and your audience.

A reception is often held afterwards, during which copies of Mark's books are available for purchase. Book signings are popular with students, who enjoy having their books signed and getting an opportunity to chat one-on-one with Mark.

Upon request, Mark can also lead an informal class discussion with a gathering of up to 60 students. This discussion is usually most effective if it is scheduled after the main lecture. If the main lecture is in the evening, the class discussion might take place the following morning. If the main lecture is in the morning, the class discussion usually follows immediately after the book signing.

Publicity materials, such as a draft press release and photos, are provided free of charge to help you publicize the event to the community.

The lecture fee ranges, depending on factors such as how much time Mark will be on campus and the number of lectures and class visits requested. Once you describe what you'd like Mark to do while on campus, I can provide a quote. To reduce costs, some schools take advantage of the following discounts.

Lecture-fee Discounts

1)
A lecture-fee discount is available to schools that invite Mark to speak at a time when he will already be in their general vicinity. To see if he'll be in your area in the near future, see his lecture schedule.

2) A lecture-fee discount is available to schools that order a large quantity of books from Mathabane Books. Some schools order many copies of Kaffir Boy well in advance of the lecture date to ensure that an entire class or grade level has read the book by the time Mark arrives on campus. This approach heightens students' sense of anticipation and excitement about Mark's impending visit.

3) A lecture-fee discount is available to schools that offer to organize a well-planned book signing and handle the book selling so that Mark can focus on chatting with students and signing books.

4) A lecture-fee discount is available to schools that invite Mark back for repeat lectures.  For example, some schools may invite him to speak every semester to a different set of students, once a year, or once every other year.
